The Zadún Ritz Carlton Reserve,

Zadún, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve, is positioned far from the rowdy spring breakers in the quieter, more culturally alive enclave of Puerto Los Cabos — near San José del Cabo rather than the busier Cabo San Lucas corridor — it sits on a hillside above dramatic dunes, where the Sonoran desert literally tumbles into the Sea of Cortés. It earned a spot on Condé Nast Traveler’s Hot List in 2020, and in 2025 claimed a place on the publication’s Readers’ Choice ranking for top resorts in Los Cabos as well as a spot on our own list of best luxury resorts in Mexico for families.

Zadún opened in 2019 as the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Mexico and one of only a handful in the world. (Favorites of our in the portfolio includes Dorado Beach in Puerto Rica and Mandapa in Bali.)

Pools and beach

The property has five outdoor pools in total, and understanding how they’re organized shapes how you spend your days from the moment you arrive.

The centerpiece is a long infinity pool built on an elevated bridge deck at roughly the middle of the property, positioned to face the ocean with unobstructed sea views. Loungers line one side of the deck and extend into a shallow water step — the kind that invites you to sit chest-deep with a drink and watch the Pacific for longer than you planned.

At one end of the main pool sits a dedicated children’s splash area, compact but well-executed. Running perpendicular to the infinity pool is a second, slightly smaller family pool that extends toward the sea — a quieter counterpart with loungers arranged in pairs under umbrellas on both sides, and a hot tub tucked at the ocean-facing end that most first-time guests walk right past.

Cabanas are shared across these two main pools: six in total, available from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at $350 per day.

Further down the hill, closer to the beach, is a smaller adults-only pool — curvaceous, genuinely serene, and considerably less crowded because fewer guests know it exists. Seating is limited to fewer than 20 chairs, most claimed by mid-morning during peak season, so an early start matters here. A 25-meter lap pool sits adjacent to the fitness center, and a separate pool within the Sensei spa rounds out the five. Two poolside bars serve the main pool areas.

The beach, however, requires a candid note. This stretch of the Sea of Cortés is wild and beautiful, with a mile-long expanse of soft white sand, but the surf is rough and not suitable for swimming. If your children are expecting a calm, wade-in beach, reset those expectations before arrival. The tradeoff is that the beach itself is strikingly pristine and uncrowded — great for long walks, whale watching, and dramatic photography, less so for a boogie board afternoon. Families who need a swimmable ocean situation should look elsewhere or plan a resort vacation call so we can help you choose the perfect Cabo resort.

room selection

The architecture here is a true achievement. Mexico City–based firm Uribe Krayer designed rooms where floor-to-ceiling glass walls fold entirely away, dissolving the line between the interior and the terrace. At night, wooden shutters layer over them for darkness and quiet. Nearly every room includes a private terrace with a plunge pool, which in practice means you have your own outdoor sanctuary regardless of what category you book.

For families, the One-Bedroom Suites (approximately 1,550 square feet) accommodate four with a king bed and double sofa bed — a workable configuration for two children who don’t need separate sleeping quarters.

The Two-Bedroom Suites are the sweet spot for most traveling families, offering genuine privacy for parents and a separate room for children, all with the same terrace-and-larger pool setup.

For larger groups or multigenerational travel, the Grand Reserve Villa is a five-bedroom beachfront property that operates as its own private compound — two stories, private pool, sweeping views, and the full resort service infrastructure behind it.

The West Enclave Residences are six-bedroom, roughly 5,500-square-foot standalone villas with private pools and, kitchen facilities — a meaningful advantage if you’re spending a week and want flexibility. I can help you to confirm room placement before booking; some rooms sit higher on the hillside with slightly obstructed views, and that difference matters.

resort activities

Zadún covers 20 acres with enough to do that leaving the property feels optional. The standout is access to the 27-hole Puerto Los Cabos golf course, a co-design by Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus that winds through desert hills with the Sierra de la Laguna as a backdrop. This resort amenity is shared with the nearby JW Marriott resort.

The activity options lean into Baja’s natural environment: private whale-watching excursions (in season), desert ecotours, and tequila tasting classes are among the experiences a Tosoani — the property’s term for your personal attendant, meaning “dream watcher” in Nahuatl — can arrange. The Tosoani model is one of Zadún’s differentiators. Think less formal concierge, more trusted local friend who texts you back promptly on your WhatsApp text chain.

Complimentary yoga and Pilates classes are offered daily, and the fitness center is high-spec with a lap pool attached. Electric bikes and traditional bikes are available to explore the property at your own pace.

kids club

Zadún’s kid’s club — Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment — is what I point to first when a client asks what separates this property from other luxury resorts in Los Cabos. This is not a drop-off kids club in the traditional sense. It is a conservation-centered educational curriculum tied directly to Baja’s ecosystem, running seven days a week and designed across age groups for children, teens, and adults alike.

Kids ages 4 to 8 engage through hands-on activities including bird-watching, chocolate making, gardening, and storytelling rooted in Mexico’s native cultural history and natural environment. In the winter, whale-watching excursions and nighttime stargazing are amazing additions given Zadún’s position along a primary humpback migration corridor.

Senseii spa at The Zadún Ritz Carlton Reserve

The spa at Zadún is one of its most compelling reasons to book, and it has only grown stronger since the addition of a partnership with Sensei. People may be familiar with this wellness brand from the Four Seasons property in Lanai as well as the property at Porcupine Creek in California.

The facility spans nearly 29,000 square feet and includes a lagoon-style treatment pool, cold plunge, dry sauna, and a remarkable shaman-led ceremony room. Sensei brings its “Move, Nourish, Rest” framework to the property through personalized consultations in fitness, mindset, sleep, and nutrition, alongside small-group studio classes that are available to guests outside of structured retreat packages. This is not a spa just for those who want a quick massage; it rewards those who linger. I loved the Savasana Sound Experience and sensory eating experience where a coach walks guests through a mindful meal at breakfast.

dining

Three restaurants anchor the food and beverage options, and the kitchen’s quality is meaningfully above what you typically encounter at an all-inclusive-adjacent resort. Humo is the signature: a wood-fire steakhouse with Latin American and Argentine influences, and if you eat one dinner on property, it should be here. The picanha steak has inspired genuine superlatives from food writers, and the wood-fired clams are as good as the steak.

El Barrio handles breakfast and lunch in a casual, open-air setting with street-style Mexican dishes— tacos, tostadas, and market bowls that kids tend to love. Note that El Barrio’s outdoor format means it closes in rain, with service moving up the hill to Humo. On certain weeknights, a traditional Mexican celebration occurs in the restaurant with full mariachi band.

Equis is the beachfront bar and restaurant: fresh seafood, cold drinks, and arguably the best seat on property for watching the sun descend. It was truly an outstanding meal. Wild donkeys watch you eat from nearby shrubbery. I was told a donkey had roamed up into the resort a few months prior to our stay. Room service runs 24 hours, and breakfast delivered to the villa terrace is one of the better ways to start a day in Baja.

local activites

The property’s location near San José del Cabo is an advantage. The colonial downtown — cobblestone streets, art galleries, the Thursday Art Walk — is about ten minutes away and feels nothing like the developed hotel zone. Flora Farms is a non-negotiable excursion: a working organic farm turned restaurant and event space that produces one of the most charming outdoor dining experiences in all of Mexico. For adventure, ATV excursions into the desert, snorkeling trips, and sportfishing charters are all easily arranged. From November through March, the whale watching from both boat and shore approaches the surreal — humpback mothers and calves have been spotted within a half mile of the beach. And El Arco, the famous stone arch of Cabo San Lucas, is a scenic 45-minute drive if you want to glimpse that particular landmark without spending the night in a noisier part of town.

final thoughts on The Zadún Ritz Carlton Reserve

Zadún earns its place in the Reserve portfolio for the right reasons: the design is quietly extraordinary, the Tosoani system service model is genuinely differentiated, the spa is world-class, and cultural authenticity is embedded throughout. For families who want beauty and intention over high-octane entertainment, it’s hard to argue with this property.

The honest limitations: the beach isn’t swimmable and three restaurants is a lean dining rotation for a week-long stay. Rain, rare as it is, effectively closes the primary casual dining venue. And the rates are an investment significant enough that getting the details right — the right room, the right category, the right travel timing — matters considerably. Zadún rewards those who come prepared. I’d love to help get you there.
