Nemacolin Resort: Truly Something For Everyone

As a resident of the Mid-Atlantic, I love the proximity to some of the best city hotels with great dining and luxurious amenities. But when it comes to full-service resorts with year-round activities, there’s not many choices for families. I had heard about Nemacolin Woodlands Resort for years and have many friends who count it as their favorite family escape, so I was excited to discover what sets it apart.

Nemacolin as a resort can be a hard concept to grasp–a sprawling 2,200-acre resort in rural Pennsylvania with three different hotels and five categories of accommodation. Activities range from golf and tennis to art classes and wildlife adventures. There’s even an antique car museum and a petting zoo. If you can dream it, they’ve got it.

Prior to visiting I wondered if Nemacolin would be a bit overwhelming–a mega resort that feels impersonal and hard to navigate. But my stay at Nemacolin surprised me. The service was some of the best I’ve experienced, the food was exceptional, and I was astounded by how much there is to do. It’s a resort that is ideal for the family that likes to stay busy, the mult-gen trip where everyone has different interests, or a girls getaway where you want to be pampered.

Getting To Nemacolin Resort

Nestled in the Laurel Highlands of Pennsyvania, Nemacolin Woodlands is located about an hour from Pittsburgh airport, and the resort can arrange for car service. It’s a three-hour drive from Washington, DC or Cleveland, four hours from Philadelphia and Richmond, and just under six hours from New York City.

The region is pastoral and scenic with plenty of attractions to explore. Not far from the resort is Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece, Falling Water–a must visit for anyone who appreciates art and architecture. Local landmarks include Laurel Caverns, the Youghiogheny River, and the Flight 93 National Memorial.

resort activities

Nemacolin Resort has two Golf Courses

When it comes to activities, Nemacolin has more activities than any resort I have ever visited. There is jeep off-roading, paintball, mini golf, axe throwing, laser tag, and a cosmic bowling alley. There are two 18-hole Pete Dye-designed golf courses and a golf academy with a Trackman simulator that allows you to simulate play at over 300 courses in the world. A rod and range club has one of the top clay shooting facilities in the world; fly fishing, white water rafting, archery and a ropes course are also available. During winter months there is skiing, snow tubing, ice skating and snow shoeing.

Animal lovers, especially little ones, will delight in Nemacolin’s wildlife program. Book a guided tour of the wildlife zoo and you may encounter bengal tigers, wolves, lions and cheetahs. Horsebackriding is available too, or you can book a private encounter with a miniature pony.

The art program at Nemacolin Resort

Nemacolin Resort is owned by the Hardy Family, one of the world’s foremost collectors of fine art. The resort’s art program is an integral part of its identity and walking through the public spaces of the hotel, you may spot a masterpiece of two. The Hardy Family Art Collection and Reflections, are two museums housing the family’s priceless works of art. The Pride and Joy Airplane Hangar is a museum housing their collection of vintage planes. I don’t consider myself a car enthusiast, but I had a great time wandering through the Woodlands Auto Toy Store, spotting everything from vintage motorcycles to an original Good Humor Ice Cream Truck.

For hands-on art immersion, there is a large art studio for guests to take classes. Jewelry making, painting, or crafting classes are available for all ages. I took a candle making class that was fun to do with a group, and the finished product was delivered to my room later that evening.

If you book your hotel through Luxe Recess, you will receive complimentary VIP perks like resort credits, a welcome amenity, daily breakfast for two per bedroom, and you will be placed in the highest priority category for upgrades. Learn about these perks.

accommodations at nemacolin Resort

There are five categories of accommodations at Nemacolin, and three of them are standalone hotels, but all are located within the resort grounds, with easy access to amenities and transportation between each.

The Chateau at Nemacolin

The Chateau is the newest hotel-style accommodation at Nemacolin and it’s the resort’s grandest, with a Forbes-Five-Star rating. A replica of the Ritz Paris, The Chateau is a palatial masterpiece of crystal, marble and refined interiors. Every room comes with dedicated butler service, turndown service with nightly cookies and there’s even an Ipad where you can choose pillows and linens, or choose from a curated list of bubble baths drawn for you on demand from your personal butler.

My entry-level room at The Chateau was massive, with tasteful pastel interiors, plush bedding and a large marble bathroom and separate minibar area. I loved everything about my stay in this hotel, from the attentive butler service, to the serene yet opulent interiors. The Chateau is kid-friendly, and a good option for families who enjoy formal interiors and five-star surroundings. It’s the closest hotel to several of the restaurants, the spa and many of the bars and lounges.

The Grand Lodge AT NemAcolin

The Grand Lodge is the original accommodation at Nemacolin, with a tudor exterior and cozy wood-paneled common spaces. The Grand Lodge has been recently renovated and has a Forbes-Four-Star rating. Decor here is masculine and woodsy–think Ralph Lauren with a contemporary twist and every room is suite style with a living space.

The Grand Lodge has dedicated butler service and upscale amenities like Dyson hairdryers and Ipads with pillow and bath menus. Many rooms have fireplaces and offer connecting suite options. The Grand Lodge is a great choice for families who want to spread out, or bookings during the holidays when the hotel will decorate your suite for the occasion.

Falling Rock At Nemacolin

Falling Rock is the resort’s 16+ option with a design inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. The rooms lean into the craftsman style decor with natural materials, earth tones and woodsy accents. It’s near the Golf Academy and art museums and the hotel has its own infinity pool, bar and lounge area.

The Estates at Nemacolin

When you want all the comforts of home, but don’t want to sacrifice style or comfort, The Estates at Nemacolin are your best bet. The estates are grand, newly built homes that can sleep up to 16 and have contemporary furnishings. Most have hot tubs, fire pits and outdoor decks perfect for entertaining. Interiors are sleek and stylish with top of the line kitchens and entertaining areas that might include pool tables and game rooms. The Estates are the ideal choice for multi-generational trips, multiple families, or large groups celebrating a milestone.

The homes at Nemacolin Resort

The homes at Nemacolin are located in a wooded area of the property near the golf courses and The Peak. They are available in two to five-bedroom layouts and each of them have their own unique decor, so it’s best to work with Luxe Recess to find one that suits your style and family’s needs.

Nemacolin Resort pools

There are seven pools at Nemacolin, ranging from adults-only to spa pools, but the one thing that sets this resort apart is their dedicated indoor pool just for kids. Located adjacent to the kids’ club, it’s a fun space with water features, a 3-foot depth and kid-sized locker rooms.

The Peak is the main pool area for all accommodations at Nemacolin. It’s a massive complex with a grotto, waterfalls, hot tubs, and a swim up bar. It’s open year round and heated during the winter so you can take a swim minutes after coming off the slopes. The Peak also houses the bowling alley, game rooms, axe throwing, ropes course and multiple casual dining options, so it’s a great spot to spend the afternoon or keep the kids busy while parents unwind. Private cabanas are available for rental all year long.

There is a second pool complex, Paradise Pools, with a small waterslide, a family pool and an adults-only pool. An indoor spa pool and an adults-only infinity pool at Falling Rock are other options for swimming at the resort.

dining at Nemacolin Resort

Nemacolin has 12 restaurants and six bars and lounges so you could stay a week and still not try them all. I thought the food at Nemacolin was some of the best I’ve had anywhere, and the variety is unmatched.

Lautrec is the resort’s signature fine dining experience and in May 2026, it will reopen after a major enovation. Aqueous is an adults-only restaurant in Falling Rock specializing in seafood and Asian-inspired cuisine. For families, there’s multiple options for grabbing a quick bite, or enjoying an upscale sit-down experience. Fawn and Fable is a casual steakhouse serving steaks, seafood and indulgent sides. Mulligans is a pub located on the golf course serving sandwiches and salads. The Circle Bar is a stylish spot in The Grand Lodge where you can grab small plates and craft cocktails.

My favorite restaurant of the trip was the resort’s newest restaurant, Gusto! Serving elevated family-style Italian food, it’s a beautifully designed space that feels perfect for a family meal or even an elevated evening as couples.

Afternoon tea is available to book in The Chateau’s Bleu Room or Lobby Bar, while The Hardy Room is a clubby cigar and cocktail lounge. The Pastisserie is a gorgeous French-style casual market serving sandwiches, pastries and coffee throughout the day at The Chateau. For kids, there’s plenty of grab and go options at Nemacolin, but my favorite was PJ’s Ice Cream Parlor, a retro style soda fountain serving popcorn and ice cream, adjacent to the art studio and kids’ club.

The kids club

Nemacolin’s kids club is an impressive space with large play areas, cubbies, a fun kids’ arcade and creative spaces. It’s adjacent to the indoor kids’ pool, PJ’s Ice Cream Parlor and the art studio. The kids club is open for ages 4-12 and daily supervised activities include mini golf, swimming, arts and crafts and scavenger hunts.

Kids’ Night Out that includes dinner and evening activities is regularly offered and parents can utilize the Family Play Room for little ones.

Spa and Holistic Healing Center

The Woodlands Spa offers a full range of treatments including facials, massages and skin treatments. The spa’s design is inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s craftsman designs, with stone and wood-beamed ceilings, a fireside lounge, and outdoor area. There’s an indoor spa pool with saunas, a steam room and hot tubs. A large fitness center is accessible for resort guests and it features all the latest equipment.

What sets Nemacolin’s wellness program apart is its Holistic Healing Center. A separate facility on resort grounds, it focuses on apothecary treatments and Eastern medicine. Cryotherapy, float therapy and infrared-light therapy are a few treatments to book. Dr. Jerry Lin is the healing center’s resident doctor offering integrated therapies and acupuncture. My treatment with Dr. Lin was my first foray into acupuncture and the experience left me feeling restored and relaxed and curious enough that I’d want to try it again at home.

final thoughts on the Nemacolin Resort

Nemacolin is packed with activities year-round so it’s an ideal destination for golfing or swimming in the summer, and winter sports during the colder months. In the fall, it’s a region with spectacular foliage and many of the outdoor activities are still accessible, including the heated pools. During the holidays, Nemacolin transforms into a winter wonderland. I visited the week prior to Thanksgiving and the property was already aglow with twinkling lights, holiday displays and Christmas trees around every corner. Hardy’s Holiday Village, the resort’s incredible holiday pop-up is not your average Christmas attraction. A sprawling wonderland filled with craft stations, storytime spots, holiday markets and displays, it felt like I had walked onto the set of a Wonka film.

For Luxe Recess, I am lucky to visit some incredible properties, but the one that surprised me the most was Nemacolin. Sometimes at larger resorts, too much choice can be a bad thing. But at Nemacolin, it works. It’s a golfer’s paradise, a mecca for wellness seekers, and a kid’s fantasy come to life. If you’re a family that struggles to make everyone happy, Nemacolin may be the perfect fit.
