The Four Seasons Lanai reviews are in, as I finally write it after my third stay on this island. The Four Seasons Lanai sits on Hawaii’s smallest inhabited island, and that’s precisely what makes it extraordinary. While Maui buzzes with activity just nine miles west, this is where you come when you want to remember what Hawaii felt like before it became a destination.
Lanai occupies just 140 square miles of the Hawaiian archipelago, the Four Seasons Lanai sits along Hulopoe Bay on the island’s southern coast, a location that delivers both protected marine sanctuary snorkeling and dramatic Pacific views. The property opened in 1990, underwent a complete transformation in 2016, and Condé Nast Traveler readers named it the #1 resort in Hawaii in 2024.

Lanai uniquely offers two distinct Four Seasons experiences. The beachfront Four Seasons Resort Lanai welcomes families and couples seeking classic luxury resort amenities—kids club, multiple pools, ocean activities, and celebratory dining. Meanwhile, Sensei Lanai, tucked into the island’s upcountry amid pine forests, operates as an adults-only wellness retreat (guests must be 16+) focused on wellness. I’ll share a review on that property (one of my all-time favorites) soon.
Guests at either property enjoy signing privileges at both, with complimentary shuttle service connecting them, but the experiences couldn’t be more different. Families belong at the beachfront property; couples seeking transformative wellness or a child-free sanctuary should consider Sensei.
Getting to the Four Seasons Lanai
Year-round travel works here thanks to Lanai’s drier microclimate, though whale watching peaks January through April when humpbacks migrate through surrounding waters. The shoulder seasons of April-May and September-October offer ideal weather with even fewer guests.
Getting here is part of the fun. Honolulu International Airport serves as the primary gateway, approximately 73 miles away with 20-25 minute flights via Lanai Air, owned by the resorts’ owner. Round trip flights are included with your stay. Guests arriving from Maui typically take the 45-minute ferry from Lahaina Harbor (ferry tickets are not included). Since getting back to Honolulu Airport is included, it is easy to visit Lanai at the end of your Hawaii vacation. And also, it’s a great strategy to save the best for last.

Pools & Beach

The central pool cascades down multiple levels toward Hulopoe Bay, with the oceanfront section reserved for adults only. It’s beautiful rather than enormous, designed more for cooling off between beach sessions than marathon swim sessions. Private cabanas line the deck, though securing one requires advance reservations during peak periods. The pools (and resort) don’t have the see and be seen vibes you’ll find at the Four Seasons in Maui.
Three minutes down a paved path brings you to Hulopoe Beach, a protected marine preserve that ranks among Hawaii’s finest snorkeling destinations. The crescent of golden sand delivers calm waters for young swimmers, tide pools for exploration, and reef fish so abundant they seem indifferent to human presence. The resort provides full beach service with chairs, umbrellas, towels, and non-motorized water equipment.

Resort Activities
Lanai rewards families who embrace outdoor adventure. The resort’s curated excursions include four-wheel Jeep tours across the island’s volcanic landscapes, horseback riding through upcountry trails, and snorkel sails along the coastline. The Lanai Adventure Park features zip lines and adventure towers with programs designed for adults and kids.

The Jack Nicklaus-designed Manele Golf Course delivers dramatic clifftop holes overlooking the Pacific. Junior golfers ages 17 and under play free after noon when accompanied by a paying adult, and the resort provides complimentary clubs. My son enjoyed his golf lesson so much he asked for two more during our stay. Four Har-Tru tennis courts and new pickleball facilities offer raquet alternatives.

The Love Lanai team leads guests through authentic experiences: learning basic hula choreography, creating traditional lei, understanding Hawaiian petroglyphs, and discovering the island’s role in Hawaiian history. Uncle Bruno, the poolside fixture who weaves palm fronds into figurines while sharing the talking parrots of the resort with guests.
The on-site Lanai Observatory provides access to a fully automated 1-meter telescope for stargazing sessions that blend Pacific navigation history with astronomy. I have tried to get into this on my three different trips to Lanai but weather or availability have not made it possible yet.
Room Selection
The resort’s 213 rooms spread across low-rise buildings along the coastline. Every room includes a private lanai, marble bathrooms with soaking tubs, and Four Seasons bedding. The cetegories’ distinctions lie primarily in views and space.

For families requiring multiple bedrooms, the Ohana Oceanfront Suites deliver one-bedroom configurations with separate living areas and sleeper sofas accommodating four guests. The larger two-bedroom Specialty Suites include living rooms, dining areas, media rooms, and multiple lanais—essentially functioning as luxury island homes.
Standard rooms and garden-view accommodations offer considerable value, particularly for families planning to spend daylight hours exploring the island rather than lounging in rooms. The gardens showcase koi ponds and tropical landscaping are deeply serene to walk through during your stay.

Four Seasons Lanai reviews Of the Restaurants
Nobu Lanai anchors the dining program with Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s Japanese cuisine served cliffside above Hulopoe Bay. The 15-course Teppanyaki experience delivers intimate chef interaction, though at $195 per person for omakase, expectations naturally rise to match pricing. Results prove inconsistent—pristine fish quality accompanied by occasional service lapses that feel incongruous at this price point. Our meal was wonderful.
Osteria Mozza Lanai, opened in November 2025, is Nancy Silverton’s first Hawaii outpost. The Italian-inspired restaurant incorporates local ingredients like lettuces from Sensei Farms and local eggs in house-made pasta.
You have to pay for the sourdough bread here, but it is a must. Some of the best bread ever. Signature dishes include Nancy’s Caesar, Ricotta and Egg Raviolo, and pizzas fired in a kiawe wood-burning oven. Guests can watch the kitchen in action at the iconic Mozzarella Bar.
Our only “complaint” about any meal during our stay was that the savory egg dishes at breakfast just seemed off to me. It’s my favorite meal of the day, and I tried eggs three different ways to get some to my liking, which should not be that hard! I surrendered to trying the other sweet signature dished on the menu which were outstanding.
Malibu Farm provides poolside lunch with organic ingredients and California-Hawaii fusion plates that are not to be missed, but take the resort Tesla to the golf course where you can have a truly solid cheeseburger or fish tacos at The Views club restaurant.

THINGS TO DO IN Lanai

Lanai’s 90,000 acres contain only 30 miles of paved road and zero traffic lights. This creates both opportunity and limitation. Families who rent four-wheel-drive vehicles (essential for island exploration) discover hidden beaches like Shipwreck Beach, lunar landscapes at the Garden of the Gods, and the historic Kaunolu Village where King Kamehameha once fished. The resort’s Jeep rental program simplifies logistics.
Lanai’s tiny downtown, Lanai City, offers charming browsing but limited shopping beyond art galleries and the general store. A newly opened bowling alley, Lanai Bowl, is the talk of the small town with an adorable 1950’s diner themed restaurant for some time away from the resort.
The authentic appeal lies in what’s absent: tour buses, chain restaurants, crowds, commercialization. Families seeking structured activities beyond the resort may feel constrained; families valuing unplugged exploration in nature without crowds will find freedom.
Final Thoughts

For those requiring more structured tourist activities and a diverse dining scenes, Maui’s or Oahu’s luxury properties might serve better.
Four Seasons Lanai succeeds brilliantly at its core premise: delivering sophisticated luxury on an island with restricted commercial activity. The property’s strengths—pristine location, exceptional snorkeling, genuine seclusion—align perfectly with families seeking refuge from typical resort saturation. Service consistently meets Four Seasons standards, and the complimentary Lanai Air flights are a complimentary private hanger adventure.
