As a travel writer specializing in small ship cruising, I’m always keeping an eye out for experiences that stand out, and Riverside Luxury Cruises does just that, especially for families. Having sailed aboard two of Riverside’s three ships—the Riverside Mozart and Riverside Ravel—I can tell you this isn’t your typical river cruise experience. It’s been elevated in every way.
While river cruising has long been perceived as the domain of retirees and couples, Riverside is rewriting the narrative for families traveling with that notoriously hard-to-please demographic: teenagers.
Why take a river cruise? While ocean cruising for families is often focused on the many resort-like amenities on the ship, river cruising is really all about the destinations. Each day of the cruise itinerary features a new picturesque area to learn its culture and history, but also European delights to savor, bikes to ride, and boutiques to browse.

Spacious Accommodations That Actually Work for Families
Riverside Luxury Cruises makes it easy for families to stay together while still giving everyone their own space, which is essential when you’re traveling with teens. The two-bedroom Owner’s Suite is an excellent choice for families seeking space and a touch of luxury. Ranging from roughly 750 to 880 square feet, depending on the ship, the suite feels more like a spacious apartment than a cabin at sea. The living area has a sofa that folds out into a bed, two armchairs, a cozy fireplace, a flat-screen TV, a dining table, and a writing desk. The suite includes complimentary laundry and ironing services, and limousine transfers on embarkation and disembarkation day take the stress out of arrivals and departures.

Both bedrooms have king beds and panoramic balcony views, and one has a walk-in closet. The second bedroom’s king bed can be made up as two twins if needed, adding even more flexibility for families. The two bathrooms feature double vanities and rain showers, so getting ready never feels cramped. Families with older teens might also consider booking individual suites, like the Seahorse suite on Ravel that I stayed in. It’s plenty big and offers a bit more privacy while keeping everyone close.

All suites come with personal butler service accessible via WhatsApp day or night, which means someone is always on hand to help your family with everything from shore excursion planning to stocking the mini-bar with your teen’s favorite drinks or arranging that late-night snack they suddenly crave. My butler kept me well stocked with Diet Coke and extra cream for my morning coffee, which was such a nice touch.

Space to Escape (and Connect)
What struck me most about both the Mozart and the Ravel was how modern and inviting the public spaces feel, especially compared with typical river cruise ships. The interiors are stylish without feeling stuffy, with polished chrome, matte brass, modern lighting, and marble tables. Seating areas have velvet cushions in rich colors and leather banquettes, which is a welcome change from the usual river cruise décor. The large windows let in plenty of sunlight, making the spaces bright, airy, and appealing even to teens who might otherwise be hard to impress.

The ships offer plenty of ways for the whole family to stay active or unwind. The large indoor pools (also unusual on a river cruise ship) are perfect for lap swimming or simply dipping off. The fitness centers feature TechnoGym bikes, treadmills, rowing machines, free weights, mats, foam rollers, and Thera-bands, and the oversized spa relaxation areas with floor-to-ceiling windows are ideal for stretching, cooling down, or just taking a quiet moment.

On sunny days, when the decks aren’t closed for low bridges, the rooftop areas are perfect for fresh air and views of the European countryside. There’s a pop-up bar with plenty of seating, including loungers and couches under a canopy, and gardens that provide botanicals for cocktails. I loved spending time on the sundeck with a book, settling into the shaded sofas and cushioned lounge chairs while watching the scenery go by. It’s also a great spot for playing games or just relaxing with a drink.

Dining That Works for Everyone
Dining is where Riverside really stands out compared to most river cruise lines. The food is made to order rather than mass-produced, and instead of a single main dining room, there are multiple venues across the fleet, with even more options on the Mozart. That variety makes a real difference when you’re traveling as a family, especially with teens who don’t always want to eat on a set schedule.
Waterside is the main dining room onboard. In the mornings and at lunch, it’s set up as an expansive buffet, making it easy for everyone to find something they like or grab a quick bite between activities. In the evening, dinner shifts to à la carte service, with menus inspired by the regions you’re sailing through and paired with local wines.

The Atelier functions as an all-day café with barista-made coffee and light bites, then transitions into a relaxed, tapas-style restaurant in the evening. It’s also where teens naturally gravitate, thanks to freshly-made waffles with unlimited toppings, an ice cream counter, and rotating snacks like homemade pretzels and pastries. Add in fresh popcorn before happy hour and all-day food availability, and no one is ever really hungry. At the same time, the quality coffee and thoughtful menus keep it just as appealing for adults.
On the Mozart, the Blue Bar Grill sits at the back of the ship overlooking the water and feels fun and unfussy, serving burgers, milkshakes, salads, and local specialties like bratwurst and pretzels. Once or twice during the cruise, weather permitting, they host a BBQ dinner on the top deck for al fresco dining.

Here’s something I really appreciated: Riverside is one of the few river cruise lines to offer 24-hour room service. This means kids can order dinner to their suite, slip into the complimentary robes and slippers, and settle in for a low-key movie night, while parents enjoy a quieter, more leisurely dinner in one of the ship’s restaurants. It’s a win-win that respects teens’ independence without compromising the quality of the overall experience.
For special occasions, the ships also offer private dining in the Vintage Room, featuring a multi-course tasting menu with thoughtfully paired wines. There is an additional charge for this experience.

Activities for All Ages
If you’re traveling with teens, Riverside makes it easy to keep everyone engaged without anyone feeling left out. I’d suggest letting them try a mix of activities in each port. Thre are walking tours if they’re into history, or more active options like biking, hiking, and even challenging kayak trips for teens who love a bit of adventure. I’ve found that hands-on experiences, like visiting Cologne’s chocolate museum, going truffle-hunting, or e-biking through the vineyards in the South of France, are the kinds of moments teens remember, and yes, they’re Instagram-worthy too.

The ship has a fleet of bikes, both pedal and e-bikes, which I think is one of the best ways to give teens some independence. They can explore the towns on their own in a safe, manageable way, or join a bike tour, which is a nice way to see the sights together without feeling cramped.
Even when the ship is sailing, there are plenty of ways to keep everyone entertained. Parents can enjoy a wine tasting with the sommelier or a mixology class with the bartender, and food lovers of any age can try a pastry demonstration or a local culinary presentation. There’s something for everyone.

The Practical Perks Parents Will Appreciate
Beyond the luxury touches, there are practical amenities that make family travel infinitely easier. Both ships feature fully equipped self-service laundry rooms complete with Miele washers, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, and softener, which is a distinct advantage when traveling with the family and can keep luggage to a minimum with a mid cruise wash of clothes.

All ships have complimentary high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi capable of streaming and gaming (though it may drop when transiting a lock or under a bridge), which means teens can stay connected and parents can work remotely if necessary.
The dress code is pretty relaxed. During the day, jeans, shorts, t-shirts, and comfortable walking shoes are perfectly fine for sightseeing. For dinner, it’s smart-casual works. My husband often wore khakis and a linen shirt, while I opted for nicer sundresses. It’s polished but comfortable, and I never felt pressured to pack formalwear or outfits I would only wear once.
One thing to keep in mind for families traveling with anyone who has mobility challenges: elevator access varies by ship. On the Mozart, the elevator serves Decks 1 through 3, while on the other ships, it only runs between Decks 2 and 3. On all ships, the sundeck is accessible by stairs only. It’s not a dealbreaker for most travelers, but it’s helpful to know in advance when choosing a ship or planning your time onboard.
Flexibility for Families
One of the things I really appreciate about Riverside is how flexible everything is. Itineraries range from 3 to 14 nights, so families can extend or combine journeys to fit their schedules and budgets. The variety of excursions in each port works perfectly when one teen wants to kayak while another prefers exploring local markets or historic sites.
Riverside also offers several packages, so you can choose the level of inclusions that works best for your family. Options range from full board without excursions to full board with excursions, or Premium All Inclusive without excursions to Premium All Inclusive with excursions. It makes it easy to plan a trip that keeps everyone happy, no matter their interests.
