The property itself is fully renovated— after a top-to-bottom overhaul completed in 2023, it reopened as a 60-room boutique property with serious sustainability credentials: an infrared energy system making the buildings roughly 90 percent self-sufficient, and locally sourced materials throughout. It’s now a member of The Leading Hotels of the World and has earned recognition from the Luxe Global Awards as both a Global Winner (2024 and 2025) and a Continent Winner.
The closest airports are Kilimanjaro International (JRO), about a three-hour drive, and Lake Manyara Airport (LKY), roughly 32 miles from the property. The lodge fits naturally into a larger Tanzania circuit that includes the Serengeti to the west.
Peak season runs from late June through October (the dry season, when wildlife congregates around water sources and game viewing is at its best) and again in January through February.

Arusha: our pre-safari itinerary
Many families arrive at Kilimanjaro airport before transiting on to Lake Manyara. We decided to spend 5 nights at the nearby Melia Arusha before proceeding to the crater, and it was well worth it to recover from the jet lag so we were well rested and energized for the safari.
We had connecting rooms overlooking the nearby coffee plantation and the views were incredible. We used our time wisely in Arusha, balancing resting at the hotel with manicures and a yoga class while exploring the local area.
We visited the Giraffe Sanctuary —a must as giraffes are not in the crater (they’re not physically capable of walking down the steep incline). We also did a walking safari in Arusha National Park with an armed private guide (don’t be swayed by the gun. They must carry one in case of rare animal danger …our guide of 15 years had only used his once) followed by a private horseback ride tour. The Arusha Cultural Heritage Center (still abuzz from Bill and Chelsea Clinton visiting in the 90’s) is a treasure trove for buying tanzanite (also a must as there is only enough to last our generation) and any other authentic gifts…be prepared for it to feel like it’s a country in Epcot however.
And finally, the Melia Arusha hotel is connected to the Sanaa Handicraft Workshop and Cafe which employs locals with disabilities who create beautiful art and jewelry. Both the experience of seeing the production and eating at the cafe were incredibly special memories. Of note, the Melia Arusha is very family friendly but be mindful that the pool is not heated and Arusha temps are cool so swimming may be limited.

Starting Our Ngorongoro Crater Safari
The experience at Ngorongoro Lodge is built around immersion in the landscape and culture. The lodge organizes full-day 4×4 game drives into the crater floor, which are the centerpiece of any stay here — more on those below. Beyond the drives, guests can book walking safaris through the Conservation Area with experienced Maasai guides, which offer a ground-level perspective on the ecosystem that’s entirely different from a vehicle-based drive.
One of the signature experiences is a luxury crater-rim picnic — a private spread set up at the edge of the caldera with sweeping views in every direction. Visits to authentic Maasai bomas (homesteads) are offered for families who want a genuine cultural experience, including participation in traditional dances, cooking, and handicrafts. These visits are handled with care and feel respectful.
For the more adventurous, hot air balloon safaris over the highlands and surrounding territory can be arranged. The lodge also organizes visits to Olduvai Gorge (less than 30 miles away), one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world and the place where Louis and Mary Leakey uncovered some of humanity’s earliest ancestors.
pools and outdoor spaces
The infinity pool at Ngorongoro Lodge is genuinely one of the most dramatic pools I’ve encountered anywhere. It’s heated, which matters at altitude — the crater rim sits at around 7,500 feet, and evenings can be cool even in peak season. The pool deck is positioned to take maximum advantage of the crater views, and the sun terrace around it is well-furnished for lingering. There is something almost surreal about floating in warm water while watching storm clouds build above one of the natural wonders of the world.
The outdoor fireplace in the common areas is another anchor of the guest experience. After an early-morning game drive, gathering around fire with a warm drink as the light changes over the crater is a memorable pleasure that makes an African lodge stay different from anywhere else. The gardens are beautifully maintained, and the property has a deck the length of the hotel overlooking the crater where you can watch Masai performances or rest under a warm blanket in the evenings. Binoculars are also plentiful and I watched with delight one evening as an elephant playfully ran down a dirt path, realizing it was dusk and the safari vehicles had returned for the evening.

The lodge has 60 rooms in total, spread across several categories. The design throughout draws on Maasai-inspired motifs — deep earth tones, handcrafted textiles, local artwork — with spaciousness and crater views as the defining luxury.
For families, the standout option is the three-bedroom Crater Suite, which is the clear answer when you need proper multi-room space. Families with young children or grandparent-inclusive travel will appreciate having the separation between sleeping areas rather than relying on rollaways. The Enkaji Junior Suite — “Enkaji” meaning “house” in Maasai — offers a bedroom and separate lounge, which is a strong mid-tier choice.
The lodge also offers connected rooms for families who need adjacent but separate spaces. There are no in-room kitchen facilities or full villa setups.

Family amenities
Ngorongoro Lodge is family-friendly, but it operates as a full-immersion wildlife experience. There is no dedicated kids club facility. What the lodge does offer are family-tailored experiences: game drives that include child-appropriate safari briefings, Maasai cultural visits that engage younger guests, and a team that is warm, welcoming, and attentive to children’s needs.
For families with children roughly ages eight and up who are excited about wildlife and culture, this works beautifully — the lodge experience itself is the excitement. For families with toddlers or children who need structured downtime activities independent of safari excursions, I’d encourage families with young children to treat Ngorongoro as a highlight within a broader Tanzania itinerary — perhaps two nights here bookended by properties with more resort-style facilities like the Four Seasons Serengeti (review coming soon!).
game drives & Wildlife
The Ngorongoro Crater is not like any other game drive destination. Because the crater walls form a natural enclosure, wildlife doesn’t migrate out — the animals live here year-round, making game viewing remarkably reliable regardless of season. You can expect lion, leopard, elephant, Cape buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, hippo, flamingo, and the famous black rhino — one of the most endangered animals in Africa and a genuine rarity at most other destinations.
The lodge operates private crater-floor drives in 4×4 vehicles with their own experienced guides, which is the right way to do this. A full picnic lunch is included, and transportation is entirely private rather than shared. Early departure (just after dawn) is strongly recommended; the crater in morning light, with wildlife active and the mist still lifting from the caldera floor, is something I don’t have adequate words for. Restroom facilities are abundant yet discrete so as to not detract from the wildlife. And returning to the resort is a quick 30 minute drive up to the rim of the crater, a life-saver with kids who are tired from early morning starts and want to swim.
For context: Ngorongoro is not the Serengeti. The game drives here are contained — you’re working within the crater’s boundaries rather than tracking animals across open savanna. You may choose to combine both, spending two nights at the Ngorongoro Lodge and two or three nights at the Meliá Serengeti Lodge to experience both the crater’s concentrated wildlife theater and the open plains. That five-to-six night Tanzania circuit, with Gran Meliá Arusha as a bookend, is Meliá’s signature itinerary.

The Spa at Ngorongoro Lodge is an intimate facility that focuses on traditional and locally-inspired treatments using natural products sourced from the region. Individual treatments include massage, body wraps, and facial services. A post-safari massage with crater views nearby is a thoroughly satisfying indulgence. We loved using the complimentary steam room during the visit which was welcomed with the cool temps and bumpy game drives.

Food is a genuine standout at this property. The culinary approach combines traditional African ingredients and techniques with Asian-influenced preparations, resulting in menus that feel distinctive. The seafood and locally sourced produce are treated with real care. Food service can be on the slower side so be mindful when considering a “quick” breakfast before your 6:30am game drive.
Breakfast and dinner are served in the main dining room, with full board packages the standard offering — all meals, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and minibar access (excluding in-room snacks) are typically included. For game drive days, the lodge prepares a picnic box lunch, which is served on the crater floor.
The Crater Lounge is the social hub of the lodge, serving cocktails, delicious smoothies and milk shakes, and East African wines alongside those extraordinary crater views at sunset. The single-restaurant format keeps things simple, and the quality justifies it.

local activities
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is surrounded by one of the richest concentrations of natural and cultural heritage in Africa, and the lodge is ideally positioned to anchor day excursions. Olduvai Gorge — the “Cradle of Mankind” — is within easy reach and operates a well-regarded museum on site. For families with children who have studied human origins, this is an extraordinary real-world complement to the classroom.
Lake Manyara National Park, known for its tree-climbing lions and enormous flocks of flamingos, is a natural add-on for an afternoon excursion. Tarangire National Park — celebrated for its ancient baobab trees and large elephant herds — is also reachable and works well as a day trip or as part of a longer circuit before or after Ngorongoro. For families interested in cultural immersion beyond the lodge’s on-site Maasai boma visits, the region offers opportunities to visit local markets and community projects with organized guides.

The crater views are extraordinary at every turn; the game viewing is among the most reliable on the continent; and the dining genuinely over-delivers for a property of this size.
Where to temper expectations: this is a boutique safari lodge, not a full-service family resort. There is no dedicated kids club, no elaborate pool complex, no in-room kitchen facilities, and no villa-style accommodation for families who want total separation and self-sufficiency. Rooms can be on the smaller side in some categories. For families with very young children or those who need structured programming running throughout the day, Ngorongoro works best as part of a longer Tanzania itinerary rather than a stand-alone stay.
