There’s something deeply satisfying about finding a place that doesn’t feel the need to announce itself. Ambergris Cay sits on the far southeastern edge of the Turks and Caicos archipelago, a 1,100-acre private island that opened to resort guests only in 2019. It’s not trying to be your typical Caribbean escape with steel drum music piped through speakers and scheduled pool activities. Instead, it offers something increasingly rare: actual seclusion on a private, all-inclusive island that truly gets you away from the crowds.
I’ll tell you upfront that this isn’t the resort for everyone. If your kids need structured entertainment or you’re looking for that bustling resort energy, there are better fits. But if the idea of children spotting endangered rock iguanas on morning golf cart rides or having an entire beach to yourselves sounds appealing, keep reading.

Access requires a bit of choreography. Most guests fly into Providenciales International Airport (PLS). From Provo, the resort arranges your transfer to Atlantic Aviation’s private terminal, followed by a complimentary 20-minute flight in a small plane to Ambergris Cay’s own airstrip. This runway, at 5,700 feet, happens to be the longest private runway in the Caribbean and can accommodate private jets up to 92 feet in length. If you’re arriving by private plane, you can land, clear customs, and be in your villa within ten minutes.
The high season runs December through April, with whale watching available January through March from Land’s End villa’s aptly named Whale Watcher’s Point. Summer and fall bring warmer temperatures but fewer crowds and lower rates.

Pools & Beach

The resort maintains a single swimming pool near the Club House on Monck Beach, and it’s deliberately understated—no swim-up bars or water slides here. What makes it work is the setting: loungers with views of the turquoise Caicos Banks, attentive service that includes afternoon ice cream delivery, and enough space that you’re never fighting for chairs. You might not even see another guest. But honestly, the pool feels almost beside the point. Each beachfront bungalow includes its own heated plunge pool, and the larger villas feature private pools.

Ambergris Cay has eight miles of coastline, and you’ll have most of it to yourself. Monck Beach, where the bungalows sit, offers powdery white sand and calm water perfect for younger children. Columbus Beach, near the tennis courts and villas like Poseidon and Neptune, has a bit more wave action on the Atlantis side—ideal for older kids who enjoy jumping waves. The resort provides kayaks, paddleboards, Hobie Cats, and a water trampoline, all complimentary.
The real standout? The resort’s day trip to Little Ambergris Cay, an uninhabited nature reserve next door. They shuttle you by boat to the Hangover Tiki Bar, a floating pontoon where you can snorkel, swim, or simply lounge with a drink while the kids explore the shallows.
Resort Activities
With just 17 bungalows and 11 villas spread across 1,100 acres, this isn’t a place drowning in programmed activities. Instead, the resort offers a thoughtful menu of options, mostly included in your stay.

Non-motorized water sports are complimentary: kayaking, paddleboarding, Hobie Cat sailing, and snorkeling. The island’s protected position on the Caicos Banks means the water stays calm and clear. Onshore fishing is included, though serious anglers will want to book deep-sea or bonefishing excursions for an additional fee.
On land, you’ll find two tennis courts and a pickleball court, with lessons available from a pro. The fitness pavilion houses Peloton bikes and opens onto a shaded rooftop yoga deck overlooking the ocean. I found it windy, so wear a layer for your morning class. Electric bicycles sit ready for exploring the island’s roads, and there are hiking trails if you’re feeling ambitious.

The sunset cruises are worth scheduling—guests regularly spot sea turtles and rays while the sky turns pink and orange. In whale-watching season, boat trips head out to spot humpbacks migrating through the Turks Island Passage.
Each bungalow and villa comes with a dedicated island host (butler) and personal golf cart, which transforms how you experience the property. Want to bike to breakfast at the Club House and golf cart back? Fine. Need your host to stock your fridge with specific drinks or arrange a surprise beach picnic? They’ll handle it before you finish asking.

Room Selection
Families have excellent options here, which surprised me given the resort’s couples-oriented reputation. The accommodations break into three categories: one-bedroom bungalows (17), two-bedroom bungalows (2), and multi-bedroom villas (11).
The one-bedroom beachfront bungalows work beautifully for couples or a family with one small child. At 1,600 square feet, they’re generous, with vaulted ceilings, indoor and outdoor showers, and those heated plunge pools just steps from the sand. These aren’t connecting rooms, so larger families need to look elsewhere.

For families needing more space, the two-bedroom bungalows offer a king and two twins and sit on a prime stretch of beach with a larger pool and patio area. The living rooms contain a queen-sized sofa bed, too, so a family of three or four kids could squeeze in.

The four-bedroom villas make more sense if your budget allows. Full kitchens, living areas that actually fit a family, multiple bathrooms, laundry, and enough space that family can spread out.

The villas range from three bedrooms (Poseidon and Neptune, near the tennis courts and Columbus Beach) to the jaw-dropping 11-bedroom Dream Estate with four pools and its own private beach. Several four-bedroom villas—Aurora and Morning Star—include twin beds, making them practical for families with multiple children. Land’s End and Puesta del Sol offer maximum privacy on the island’s southernmost point.

One note: villas spread across the island. Our villa was a 12-minute golf cart ride to meals. The golf carts take bluetooth to play your own music so enjoy the ride!
This property is one of our preferred partner hotels with exclusive travel advisor rates (and we’re a Virtuoso agency in addition to publishing this magazine). Kids ACTIVITIES
At the Club House, where lunch is served, families can find pool tables, ping-pong, board games, and video games. The still shallows include free non-motorized water sports as well as water trampoline you can swim to.
The saving grace? The island itself keeps kids engaged. Children can spend hours hunting for iguanas, exploring beaches, learning to paddleboard and search for wild flamingoes. The small number of families on island means children quickly befriend each other, arranging to meet at the pool or beach.
dining AT Ambergris Cay Turks and Caicos

All meals are included, served à la carte rather than buffet-style, and this alone sets Ambergris Cay apart from typical all-inclusive resorts. You won’t find theme nights or reservations required weeks in advance. Instead, the kitchen prepares what you want, when you want it. Dinner menus rotate frequently at the restaurant.
Calico serves as the main restaurant, offering Caribbean-influenced cuisine with international touches. The menu changes based on seasonality, but expect fresh seafood—lobster, snapper, tuna—alongside steaks, pasta, and creative vegetarian options. The Club House provides more casual fare: burgers, paninis, salads, grilled fish for lunch.

Families particularly appreciate the in-villa dining option. Butlers can arrange beach picnics with fried chicken, tropical fruit, and coconut cake, or families can order room service and eat on their patio while the sun sets. The flexibility means you can match meals to your mood rather than the other way around.
Premium spirits, wine, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks are included. The bars at Calico and the Club House mix solid cocktails, and the bartenders quickly learn your preferences. Only reserve wines and the Chef’s Table carry additional charges.
One caveat: as wonderful as the food was, it’s not Michelin-star dining. It’s very good resort cuisine prepared well with fresh ingredients. If you’re expecting cutting-edge gastronomy, adjust expectations. If you want delicious meals you don’t have to think about, this delivers.

spa
Elevate Spa sits in a lush garden setting with four treatment rooms: one for couples, two singles, and a manicure/pedicure room. The spa menu covers the expected offerings—Swedish massage, deep tissue, hot stone therapy and body wraps. The skills of my massage therapist were unexpected, however, and a standard massage became well-executed deep tissue with Thai style stretching that impressed me.
I appreciated that treatments can be delivered to your villa or bungalow for an additional fee of $110 per person, particularly useful when you don’t want to leave your private pool but could use a massage. The spa uses products from the region, and the oceanfront location of the treatment cabanas means you can hear the waves during your session.
For children, the spa offers basic services like manicures and pedicures, though there’s no dedicated kids’ spa menu.
The spa isn’t the resort’s main draw, and it shouldn’t be. This is a place for outdoor activities and beach time, with spa treatments as a pleasant add-on rather than the centerpiece.
Local Activities

Here’s where things get tricky: there is no “local” in the traditional sense. Ambergris Cay is a private island, and you’re not popping into town for shopping or seeking out local restaurants.
More practically, the resort can arrange fishing charters, diving excursions to nearby reefs, and boat trips to explore other cays in the archipelago. These come with additional fees, but they’re handled seamlessly by your island host.
The question becomes: do you really want to leave?
Final Thoughts on Ambergris Cay Turks and Caicos

Even though there aren’t a lot of people, it doesn’t mean you can’t make new friends
Ambergris Cay excels at a very specific thing: providing genuine privacy and natural beauty with service that never intrudes but always delivers. The 1,100 acres mean you can hike for an hour and encounter only iguanas and birds. The low guest count ensures personalized attention without feeling precious or overattentive.
But it requires the right expectations. This isn’t a resort where kids clubs occupy your children all day while you read by the pool. It’s not a place with nightlife or shopping or constant entertainment. If those elements matter to your family, other Turks and Caicos resorts might suit you better.
If driving around the coastline of a mostly undeveloped island in your golf cart playing your family’s favorite playlist sounds like a great morning, consider it. If stopping at the various shores and tidepools to let your kids see what they can find, even better.
Where Ambergris Cay shines is offering families a chance to disconnect together—to bike around an island without traffic, to spot whales from your villa, to eat breakfast in pajamas before swimming directly from your room to the ocean. Children who typically resist leaving their devices often spend days exploring beaches and playing in waves because there simply aren’t competing distractions.
I can secure additional benefits for my clients with my direct relationships with the property’s management team. More importantly, I can help you determine if this resort actually matches your family’s needs or if another property would serve you better.

The resort’s all-inclusive nature means one price covers nearly everything—flights to the island, meals, drinks, most activities, your butler, and golf cart. This transparency makes budgeting straightforward and eliminates the nickel-and-diming that plagues many luxury resorts.
For families seeking true seclusion with genuinely professional service, Ambergris Cay delivers something increasingly rare. I’m here to ensure its the right fit for your much-needed vacation.
